Art Quilts in The Netherlands
Reading by Henk Lijding MA on the OEQC, every day from 3 p.m. until 4 p.m. with opportunity for questions.
The reading is in Dutch on Thursday 17-10 and Saturday 19-10. On Friday 18-10 and Sunday 20-10 the reading is in English and Dutch.
Enjoy the richness and variety of art quilts. What makes a quilt an art quilt? And what is their art historical significance? Art historian Henk Lijding examines those and other questions in his lecture on art quilts. In addition to the common 2D works, Henk Lijding will discuss transparants, objects and installations as well. Even the newest development: art quilts video’s. The lecture is a richly illustrated introduction to his recently published book: Art Quilts in the Netherlands. In that innovative book, art quilts are explained art historically and complemented with an overview of the Dutch art quilters scene. A selection of the art quilts referred to are on display at OEQC, in the Genderhall. You may be convinced of their beauty and expressiveness.
Henk Lijding (1940) is art historian (Leiden University) and an expert on art quilts. He writes articles on art quilts for Quiltnieuws, the magazine of the Dutch Quilters Guild, since 2009. He wrote the catalogue of the exhibition ‘Uit de Naad’ (2009, Alkmaar). He was a member of the jury of European Art Quilts VII, and accompanied the opening of its exhibition at the Deutsches Textilmuseum Krefeld with a lecture on the process of adjudication. Henk Lijding curated the great exhibition ‘Art Quilts in the Netherlands’ in May of this year and he was the initiator of the symposium ‘Quilts and Art’, which, amid great interest, was held on the occasion of the exhibition at Gouda.

Experiment with foiling onto fabric by superimposing a variety of gold, silver or copper Celtic motifs onto a background to produce a small A3 size piece with a contemporary twist. Pat will cover several foiling methods on the day as well as techniques for successfully working with iron-on bias tape. She will also tell you the stories behind some of her Celtic pieces and the origins of some Celtic designs. This project can be done by hand or machine although you may get more out of the day if you do manage to bring your machine. A kit can be supplied for this class containing a choice of designs and everything you need (except machine threads) for a successful outcome.

Conjure up the atmosphere and capture memories of special places in this workshop. Colour is one of the main topics of this workshop: how to use colour to set a mood and atmosphere. Create a background stratum of colour and then superimpose a tiny, pictorial glimpse or detail of the scene. Quilting patterns will be discussed to add meaning to the piece and later students can hand embellish with embroidery and beads. We will also touch on gilding techniques. These pieces are A4 sized, achievable and manageable in a workshop. A choice of kits will be supplied for this workshop containing everything you require to finish the project. General information:
Teachers Quiltbiographies
Five elements, textiles, color, line, form and technique bring me to design and create my quilts. They are built in layers of self-painted, stamped or otherwise processed materials. Stratification of the material in the design fascinate me because each successive layer leads to a new discovery. I love to experiment, to go exploring in materials, colors, techniques. My inspiration comes from my own neighborhood, city, the arts, and especially nature. An idea, a technique always leads to a series of designs. The love of textiles and engineering I pass on to my students. My goal is to inspire them so that they dare to find their own path.
